Hello faithful reader,

We’re back. We returned from a long weekend trip to the “Dacks.” I looked forward to this trip for sometime. As you know from previous posts there is nothing I enjoy more than introspective quality of the woods and the solitude which, for me is a part of such an adventure.

One of my favorite writers, Henry David Thoreau said, “Some of my pleasantest hours were during the long rain-storms in the spring or fall, which confined me to the house for the afternoon as well as the forenoon, soothed by their ceaseless roar and pelting; when an early twilight ushered in a long evening in which many thoughts had time to take root and unfold themselves.” Thoreau went on to say, “How vast and profound is the influence of the subtle powers of Heaven and Earth.” Probably my favorite Thoreau quote about solitude is, “I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.”

We awoke Saturday morning to a beautiful sunrise and hoped the sun would remain with us throughout the day. I thought ahead of reaching the summit, climbing the fire-tower and allowing the clear skies to showcase the great expanse and beauty of this wonderful park. We were not disappointed!

We returned from a snowshoe hike of Goodnow Mountain and showered before going out for a bite to eat. I’m not much for television. I prefer my reality to include myself on an active level. I donned my down jacket, reached for a cigar, cigar cutter and lighter and headed out the door for the front porch. The temperature this evening did not rise much from earlier in the day and sat at a balmy 2-degrees. I clipped my cigar, lit the end and enjoyed a relaxing smoke. As I looked up into the night sky my eyes met the huge expanse of the Adirondack night sky. It always amazes me the stars which are visible as a result of the lack of ambient light. I am sure my wife would have looked at me and thought I was crazy for sitting outside in such temperatures. As I sat and smoked I thought of a similar time when Tony and I shared a cigar and a glass of Jack Daniels on a porch overlooking a frozen Schroon Lake. I recall it being so quiet one could hear the snowflakes falling through the air and settling on the snow covered ground.

I love this park. I love the expanse and the opportunities for solitude which this beautiful park provides. I love the ability to drive a short distance to find myself at one of the many trail-heads awaiting my arrival beckoning me to explore the trail as well as my thoughts.

A special shout out to my friend Barry. I’m so happy I was able to introduce you to my son and happy you were able to join us.

Namaste.

Chris
